At Besancon we spent the day at the citadel overlooking the town. It has a zoo & several museums including one of the resistance & deportation. The grassy slopes were decorated with these big stars in a variety of designs. We could either follow the river round the city or go under it via a tunnel. As it was the 14th July in the evening there was a big firework display.
You can just see the boat moored on the river below the citadel
Don't know what this huge wheel was used for !
As the weather got even hotter there was only one way to keep cool. The river at L'Isle sur Doubs was full of little fishes which came & nibbled us if we stayed still.
The weather changed as we made our way down the Rhine towards Strasbourg. Paul got rather wet driving the boat while Val stayed nice & dry inside. After we left the river for the canal the weather improved so we decided to go for a long bike ride on the German side of the Rhine where Val managed to fall of her bike & break her hip. Fortunately we made it to Strasbourg before calling the pompiers to take her to hospital.
The next 5 weeks we stayed put in the pleasant Club de Plaisance of Strasbourg where Paul got his exercise pushing Val around in a wheelchair. Getting on & off the boat was fun with crutches!
We found this nice beach cafe on the German side of the Rhine.
There are canals all over the centre of Strasbourg but not for our use only the trip boats. On our way out we pass the European Parliament buildings.
Leaving Strasbourg after Val is given permission to walk again the next stop was the pretty town of Saverne where we moored opposite an imposing chateau. The narrow streets were full of pretty buildings but this cafe complete with tin man was our favourite.
